Doppler Ultrasound – What It Is and Why You May Need One

March 02, 2025

A Doppler ultrasound is a special imaging test that evaluates blood flow in arteries and veins. It helps detect blockages, blood clots, and circulation issues.

Who Needs a Doppler Ultrasound?

Your doctor may recommend this test if you have:
Varicose veins or deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
Peripheral artery disease (PAD)
High blood pressure in pregnancy (Preeclampsia screening)
Carotid artery blockages that may lead to stroke

How Does It Work?

During the test, a handheld probe is moved over the area being examined, and sound waves are used to track blood movement. The procedure is painless and takes about 20-30 minutes.
