How to Prepare for an Ultrasound – A Complete Guide

March 02, 2025

Ultrasound exams are simple, but some require preparation to ensure accurate results. Here’s what you need to know:

Abdominal Ultrasound (Liver, Kidneys, Gallbladder, etc.)

Fasting Required – Do not eat or drink for 6-8 hours before the test. This reduces gas in the stomach and improves image clarity.

Pelvic Ultrasound (Uterus, Ovaries, Bladder, Prostate, etc.)

Full Bladder Needed – Drink 4-6 glasses of water an hour before the scan and avoid urinating. This helps get a clearer view of pelvic organs.

Pregnancy Ultrasound

Early Pregnancy (First Trimester): Full bladder is required.
Second & Third Trimester: No special preparation needed.

Doppler Ultrasound

✔ No specific preparation is required. You can eat and drink as usual.
